Believe it or not, Memorial Day Weekend wasn't started so mattress companies and shopping centers could have CRAZY CRAZY sales. I don't know why retailers think they should commercialize a holiday that was started to honor our fallen soldiers.
I looked up the facts of the holiday, why not learn something while your here:
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It was called this because it was a time set aside to honor the Civil War soldiers by decorating their graves. It was first observed on May 30th, 1868. After Word War I, observances also began to honor those who had died in all of America's wars. In 1971, congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, and made it the last Monday in May.
I admire those that have gone off to war to protect our freedom, or help others to gain freedom. I may not always agree with the President, but I will always support the men and women that serve our country. I admire their courage and strength and pray that those that have been sent away in the current war, return safely and soon.
Let's have a moment of silence for all those that never returned home.
I am going to annoy Sharon and Marie with this Blog.

I love reading your blog!!! We are having a lot of fun with Katie here. We had a surprise retirement party for my dad. He was very surprised!!!!!
Buffie
Yes, indeed. These days we head out jetskiing on every holiday without two seconds' thought of what important thing we're supposed to be commemorating. My parents dragged us to the Logan cemetery every Memorial Day during my childhood and that was the beginning of my love of history and the people who inhabited it. (Though I thought it was exceedingly lame at the time.)
I hope we can somehow remember to remember.
Buffie - I am so happy for your dad!! Retirement is my one goal in life, haha!!
Marie - My parents never took me to the cemetary, but I went a couple of times with my grandma, and she would tell me facts about each person. She is the reason why I love history so much. I love that your family went to the cememtery every year.
